Digital mentoring

Bridging the Digital Divide

As a key member of the Friendship Alliance, the Digital Literacy Foundation plays an essential role in reducing social isolation and strengthening independence for older Australians across Western Sydney and the Nepean. For nearly 30 years, the Foundation has supported vulnerable and marginalised community members, recognising that digital literacy is now a fundamental life skill.

As more services move online, older adults are at increasing risk of exclusion, particularly those over 75, people on low incomes, those living in regional and remote areas, people living with disability, and First Nations communities. Without the skills and confidence to navigate the digital world, many face barriers to accessing healthcare, government services, banking, and social connection.

The Digital Literacy Foundation addresses this gap through personalised, one-on-one, face-to-face digital mentoring delivered by trained volunteer Tech Mates. Each Learner sets the pace and focus of their sessions, whether learning to access online services, use Telehealth, manage banking safely, avoid scams, or connect with family and friends. This tailored approach ensures that learning is respectful, practical and empowering.

The impact is both measurable and meaningful. Recent programs in the Nepean region show that 100% of participants felt more confident using their device after just one session. Ongoing participation leads to greater independence, renewed engagement with hobbies and community life, and reduced feelings of isolation. The mentor relationship itself often becomes a valued source of connection and encouragement.

Beyond service delivery, the Foundation actively advocates for digital equity and challenges ageism, promoting the rights of older adults to participate fully in an increasingly digital society.

Through its commitment to empowerment, connection and practical support, the Digital Literacy Foundation exemplifies the Friendship Alliance’s shared vision of communities where older people can thrive with dignity, purpose and belonging.
